In Norse mythology the lights have more than one common legend. One believes that the lights were reflections off the shields and other battle gear belonging to the woman warriors called the Valkyrie. The aurora was also seen to be the rainbow bridge called the Bifrost. This bridge was seen to take the people who died in battle to their place of rest in Valhalla.

In Sweden the lights were seen as the portrayal of good news. It was seen as a gift from the gods. Another Swedish legend is that the lights were a reflection of bait fish (herring) and that it meant it would be a day of good fishing. The Swedish farm community also celebrated this gift and thought it to mean a good year of harvest. (Egeland, 2000)
