In France and Italy the lights are seen as a bad omen and suggest a future of war, plague and death. 

 

This is similar to the beliefs in Scotland and England, and suggest that they are a sign of future mishaps as well.

In Estonia, the belief is a bit more positive. They see the aurora as horse drawn carriages that carry a god to otherworldly nuptials. (The Aurora Zone, 2015)
