In Iceland the lights were believed to help with delivery in childbirth, but only if the mother didn't see the lights while giving birth. If she looked her child was believed to be born with crossed eyes.

In Greenland this was also tied to childbirth, but they were viewed in a more depressing way. The aurora was seen as the souls of babies killed at birth, or ones who were still born.

In Finland the dancing lights were supposedly caused by a Firefox, who when running through the snow his tail would spark. The Finnish word for the lights even directly translates to mean "fire fox". Another legend by the Sami people of Finland was that the lights were created when whales expelled water from their fluke. (The Aurora Zone, 2015)
